Sibud-Sibud Cave
Sibud-Sibud Cave in the province of Abra in Luzon has been recently classified as a Class III cave and placed under the protection and management of the Philippines’ Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This means that inexperienced cavers can come visit, as long as they are accompanied by experts. The cave may also be utilized for economic activities such as the extraction or collection of guano or bird’s nest.
The classification was carried out by the DENR’s Biodiversity Management Bureau, pursuant to Republic Act No. 9072 or the National Caves and Cave Resources Management and Protection Act. This law mandates that the DENR provide and implement a cave management program with the goal of conserving and protecting the cave and its resources.
Sibud-Sibud Cave is located along a newly constructed road in the municipality of Tineg. Following this recent classification, residents and the local government are expecting the number of visitors to the cave to increase, and plans for the construction of public utilities for tourists and spelunkers are already in place.
